into st. mary's county. rain showers are a big part of the forecast for today. heavier, steadier showers move in tonight and into tomorrow. we could be under the gun for severe storms tomorrow. we will give you the details in the seven-day coming up. we are following a story from northbound washington. d.c. police are trying to figure out how a man fell down a smoke stack to his death. >> derrick ward joins us live from the scene with details. do we know what the man was doing up there? >> reporter: well, we may indeed know. let me set the scene for you a bit. now, there is a nine-story apartment building here at the intersection of connecticut and marbro. and folks were taking in the view early this morning and then had a tragic out come.

we were told it was 3:45 when police, fire and ems were called to the nine-story building for a report that somebody had fallen down a smoke stack from the roof. a spokesperson from the d.c. fire and ems tells us what happens next. >> when we were arrived on the scene, the firefighters were greeted by people who indicated that they were on the roof and an acquaintance climbed op smoke stack, and then apparently had fallen down. of course, rescue workers went to the roof and down to the lower levels, an additional technical team arrived on the scene, and we found an adult male at the shaft at the level of the eight or nine story building. >> reporter: that person was announced at the scene. he was identified as an adult male in his 20s. he fell at least 100 feet.

we are told that alcohol was a factor. we are live here in northwest, and now back to you. >> thank you, derek. new today, a man in the hospital after being stabbed several times. this happened overnight at grand view in wheaten. the man was conscious and breathing when taken to the hospital. he is currently in stable condition. police are still looking for his attacker. they think he might have gotten away in a blue vehicle. court papers reveal shocking new details about the planning that went into the shooting in southeast washington. investigators know this because one of the men charged appears to be cooperating with police. >> reporter: the court documents outline the blind hatred and revenge that led to the worse shooting in the city's history. it began eight days earlier when jordan howe was shot, and two

others were injured. the motive was the suspected robbery of a gold-colored bracelet, later found to be misplaced and the shooting was planned by the brother of the bracelet's owner, orlando carter. carter fled the hospital and vowed venlgance on those responsible. and he said, quote, i will shoot up the funeral. carter's gang already had two handguns and an ak-47 became focused of obtaining another gun. he said he knew a man, tavon nelson, who had one. he ordered his men to kill nelson and get the gun for orlando carter. and carter drove his men and hit the automatic open window on all of the windows. and after the shooting stopped a witness says the minivan did not move for approximately ten

seconds. he could see the bodies of those strewn about. a police car saw the van speed away. orlando carter and simms were captured. police say that such was the climate of fear that orlando carter created in the community, if he would have gotten away that night they feel they might not have ever arrested him. this weekend be prepared for metro delays because of track work. you can expect up to 40-minute delays this weekend on the red, blue and orange lines. and crews will replace old tracks with new ones. you may want to give yourself extra time if you are going to the nats games today and tomorrow. if you ride metro, you may have gotten your purse or almost an

elbow caught in the door. but one man says the doors closed right on his neck friday morning. other passengers screamed when they realized his head was outside and his body still inside. >> just it shut on my neck. and i am in shock. i am wondering if this was actually happening. >> reporter: he said he was getting off the train when the doors suddenly closed around his neck, trapping him inside. >> i said help me, somebody help me. i dropped what i had in my hands, and i could feel other people behind me trying to help out. >> he said the doors closed so fast he did not have time to get out of the way. he feared the train would take off with his head stuck in the doors. >> it felt like a long time, but i can't tell you whether it was maybe 20 seconds, 30 seconds.

>> reporter: an alert sounded before the doors close, but he says he did not hear that warning. >> i am an experienced metro rider, and i did not hear that. >> he said he had red marks on his neck from where the door squeezed him and got a headache, but was otherwise unharmed. he says he thinks the train should be equipped with panic buttons for situations like this. >> i think in the event where something happens like that, maybe there should be a button or something somebody pushes, an emergency button to open the doors. >> reporter: investors say they are planning to interview the chain operator as part of the investigation, and they want to know if this was caused by a malfunction or something else. funeral arrangements have been set for self rights

pioneer, dorothy wright. there will be a viewing at the national council of negro women. on wednesday, there will be two public memorial services. her funeral will be held next thursday at the national cathedr cathedral. the funeral will be open to the public, so several opportunities to pay respect to a richly and giving life. the time is 9:07. a proposal upsetting parents, and what soon could be missing from local school roads. a new study on kids and videos. how much time it takes for grades to start falling. and rain is in the forecast. chuck will tell you when you need to break out the umbrella when we come back.

bret michaels is in critical condition after suffering a brain hemorrhage. the 47-year-old was rushed to the intensive care with a severe headache. doctors discovered bleeding at the base of his brain stem. doctors expected him to make a full recovery, and michaels rose to stardom with the band poison, and is now a contestant on the show "the apprentice."

men were taken to a federal courthouse in norfolk, virginia, yesterday. the u.s. flew the suspected somali pirates from east africa where they were held on american ships. if convicted, they face a mandatory life sentence. the boy scouts of america must pay more than $18 million to a s abuse victim. jurors in portland, oregon, ordered the boy scouts to pay jerry lewis $18 million in punitive damages. the abuse happened back in the 1980s. >> i don't have closure yet. i have a long road ahead of me, still. but a huge jumping point, a huge start for me. >> last week a juror found them negligent. they noted the scouts never

apologized to lewis. crossing guards could be next on the chopping block in fed rick county, maryland. the sheriff's office considering eliminating the jobs at a dozen schools because of the budget. parents are not the only ones concerned about the proposal. >> reporter: how important are the crossing guards to you? >> very important. >> reporter: every afternoon when the elementary school here gets out hundreds of kids rush a across the busy intersection. but with budget cuts looming, these jobs on the chopping blocks. >> i think they find funding for things that are less important. somebody needs to be here to control the situation. >> reporter: the frederick

county sheriff's department started the program covering 15 locations. the county sheriff proposed to cut the program from the sheriff's budget next year and shift the 1$22,000 over to the schools. >> this shift would mean that we would have to reach out into the neighborhood and perform a function has previously been done by various police agencies. philosophically, we are not very comfortable with that. >> the sheriff department defends this saying it's a transportation issue, not law enforcement. >> parents are already frustrated. this year the board of education decided to cut buses to homes that live less than a mile from the school. and now they don't know what they will do when their crossing guards are not out there to protect them. with more budget talks to come,

the future of the crossing guards remains in limbo. >> a vote on the crossing guard situation is scheduled for april 28th. in news for your health this morning, it's no secret, kids love video games. it may explain why your child's school grades are suffering, especially young boys. researchers looked at boys between the ages of 6 and 9 who did not have any video game systems at home. one group was given video games and the other was not. after four months the video game players had lower reading and writing skills. >> this study had a simple finding. given new toys, a video game, and kids will play it and they will play it at the expense of reading and writing. >> experts say to limit how much time they play with them, maybe one hour a day. i can tell you, i don't think

of all-time. >> they could google him. it's bonus sunshine first thing this morning in the washington area. enjoy it, because it will not last all weekend long. a little bit of sunshine to get your sunshine started. a live picture of the jefferson memorial, and the 14th street complex, the george mason memorial there that comes past the jefferson memorial. and it's a pleasant day, and the sunshine temperature jumped into 59 degrees. we have only half of the average of rainfall for the month of april. april running 6.4 degrees than average.

and temperatures around the rest of the state this morning, upper 50s and low 60s where the sunshine has been able to break through first thing, but there are showers out there this morning. and a little ribbon of rain showers running down through manassas, and over i-95 and to the north of fredericksburg. and so southern calvert and down into st. mary's county as well. we can see the little track of rain shower staying south of washington. that's the reason we have the sunshine around here, but the rain showers not too far away. up in the mountains of west virginia, a wide view, and then another cluster of showers in southern ohio and northern kentucky. and that's heading our way. and here is where the industrial strength severe weather is this morning, this area is targeted for a high risk of severe weather as we go through the day today. be on the lookout, if you are traveling towards nashville, jackson, mississippi, that's where the real bad weather will be for today.

the whole area of showers will be lifting in our general direction behind the warm front as it comes through tomorrow. and so for today, one or two rumbles cannot be ruled out, and then there is the increasing risk of severe weather in the parts of mississippi river valley, and then tomorrow the risk of showers with stronger thunderstorms comes our way. high pressure giving way today. first patch of rain rolling in here overnight tonight, moderate to briefly heavy at times, and then off and on periods of showers with a rumble or two throughout the course of the day. tomorrow, our microcast hd, 8:00 this evening, another patch of showers coming through. and 2:00, moderate to heavy at times, so we will keep an eye on that. and cloudy, cooler today. rain likely, if not first thing this morning then coming up this afternoon. and then tomorrow, clouds, showers, and maybe a rumble or two of thunder.

good morning, and welcome back to "news4 today." >> the news is just ahead but first a quick check of the forecast. meteorologist, chuck bell, is live in hd here in our studio. >> for people that didn't know we were coming hd, i apologize for jumping out of the screen first thing on a saturday. not a bad way to get the weekend started. the good news,it will reduce the pollen count that remains high. it was 462 cubic grains. the rain showers should help reduce that a bit. temperatures made it into the upper 50s and low 60s right now, with a little bonus sunshine out

there around washington. but there are showers up there in western maryland, out towards winchester, and up towards toms brook in the shenandoah valley. rain showers are part of the forecast today. mostly cloudy day except where we are getting bonus sunshine this morning. if you are headed out to the national's game, taking on the dodgers at 1:05 for the first pitch. i think they will be able to get the game in. >> sounds good. we are following a developing story from northwest wash this morning. d.c. police are trying to figure out how a man fell to his death down a smoke stack down a nine-story building. it happened at 3:45 at the connecticut house apartments on the corner of connecticut avenue. firefighters say a group was on the roof when one man climbed up

a smoke stack and fell. crews found him at the bottom of the shaft in the lower level. the victim is believed to be in his 20s. he was not living in that building. new today, a man is in the hospital after being stabbed multiple times. the stabbing happened overnight in wheaton. police say the man was conscious and breathing and is currently in stable condition. police are still looking for his attacker. they think he might have gotten away in a blue vehicle. court papers show a suspect in the d.c. mass shooting is apparently cooperating with authorities. the documents outline the time line behind the killings. they begin when jordon howe was killed, and the next day the brother of the bracelet's owner was shot and wounded. according to court papers, carter vowed to shoot up howe's funeral for revenge.

and then carter order his men to steal nelson's gun, and then minutes later carter drove his men to carry out the drive-by shooting. cart carter and simms were captured. >> had they not done what they did, we would have nobody in custody. today we would have nobody. >> she is referring to the police officers that took action here. and the charges have been dropped against a 14-year-old that was originally charged. a child pornography investigation under way in prince william county led them to a minor suspect. news4's julie carry has the details. >> these are the search warrant documents that detailed the investigation conducted by a

police officer working with the internet crimes against children task force. the probe began in february with a tip. the local task force investigator tracked a suspect who was using an e-mail address at yahoo.com. police discovered numerous images of child porn had been sent from that address, and they discovered the suspect was a 16-year-old boy that lives in triangle. the police seized a computer and thumb drive. police cannot talk about the case or say whether charges have been filed. >> the problem with child pornography on the internet, it really has exploited and found on web sites and peer to peer environments. law enforcement, they have

trained people making cases every day because there is no shortage of cases to be made. >> reporter: she says investigators are seeing more cases involving adolescence. >> what we see here is child pornography investigations here and across the world, there is no stereotypical person being arrested. >> reporter: she says parents need to be vigilant to find out what their teens are accessing online to make sure they don't become a source of the line to the county's tip line. >> and a young man that answered the door at the triangle home said he had nothing to say about the police investigation. a metro train derailed last night in the rail yard in prince georges county. there were no passengers on the train, which was out of service. none of the employees onboard were injured. metro is investigating.

now for the latest on the oil rig explosion off the louisiana coast. the coast guard called off the search for survivors. the rescue turn into the the recovery mission of the bodies of the 11 missing workers. the announcement was made after three days of searching. the names of the workers have not been released. >> it is a difficult thing. i am a father and a husband as well. i have done this a few times before, and it's never easy. your heart goes out to these people in their time of trouble. >> the coast guard is working to clean up oil spilled after the collapse. this accident has some people rethinking president obama's new commitment to open up u.s. waters to drilling. the plan includes sites 50 miles off virginia's coast. ann thompson reports.

>> reporter: this is what first responders saw. the 11 missing workers, hopes were they could be found. the coast guard and the oil companies are trying to prevent an environmental tragedy. today a sheen of oil up to 100 square miles floats over the gulf, while officials say they don't see any oil spilling from the under water well head, they are taking no chances. oil containment booms made of vinyl or plastic materials are placed on the surface of the water around the spill. they keep the oil and any debris in a confined area. from the airplanes dropped thousands of gallons of chemicals that allowed it to

collect the oily water from the surface. despite the disaster, the white house today said president obama has no intention of backing away from his plan to expand offshore drilling announced last month. >> we are going to need to harness traditional sources of fuel, even as we ramp up renewable home grown energy. >> reporter: he wants to include the section of the arctic ocean north of alaska. as crews work to contain the damage, environmentalist worry about sperm whales and the possibility the oil could harm the wet lund and fishing community. >> there are risks. if you expand oil drilling you will see the risks off your shores. so if we make a decision, you need to know this is coming to your coast as well.

9:47 right now. time to check in with chuck. >> yeah, indeed we have a little bit of sunshine for folks in and around town hoping to get their day started on the right note, but rain will be part of the forecast today and tomorrow. it has been a fairly dry month so far, even though we don't like to play catchup in the rainfall department as we get into a weekend, everybody. and a little bonus sunshine here in the mid-morning hours of our saturday, at least right around town. we could see lots of sunshine here reaching the jefferson memorial there in downtown washington. the current temperature topped all the way up to 59 degrees at national airport. 62 here in beautiful northwest washington. it has been a dry april. april rainfall just over an inch, half of the average for

the month. boy, has it been warm. temperatures running 6.5 degrees above average. and 59 here in washington, and 57 in annapolis. baltimore, 56 this morning. and then generally 50s and low 60s out to the west as well. here is a check of live doppler. you get a sense that there is a couple sprinkles down to the south and west of washington, even though we are getting sunshine around here. also the ribbon of showers going into charles county and a couple sprinkles across west virginia as well. and then we get a general sense of the track mostly down to the south. and gradually there is more rain to come. next little area of showers lifting into southwestern ohio, and a real big-time severe weather in and around memphis,

tennessee, it will be a banner weather day across parts of arkansas, and mississippi, and move into the atlanta georgia area as well. typical of springtime now, firing up the big thunderstorms across the western ohio valley. this will be a busy day for the deep south. and some of the storm will be coming our way for tomorrow. the severe weather is for today. and slight moderate and high risk of severe weather down to the south and west. for tomorrow, though, that area of slight risk does move into the washington area, so we have to keep a weather eye to the sky on sunday afternoon. high pressure giving way allowing the warm front and all the showers and thunderstorms associated with it to come our way tomorrow. and rainfall amounts, not much through the course of the day. less than 1/10 of an inch. and then heavy rain coming through late tonight and

rainfall amounts generally closing in on an inch. for today, a few sunny breaks but becoming cloudy. and then for tomorrow, cloudy with rain and thunderstorms possible, and we have to watch out for one or two of the storms reach severe limits on your sunday. i think tomorrow will be the busiest day if we will have a threat for severe weather. if you need more sunshine back in your life, you don't have to wait forever for it. tuesday, wednesday and thursday of next week, a quieter pattern resum resumes. elite kcommandoes and j lo are all things you could see at the box office this weekend. members of a special forces unit are send in to the jungle on a search and destroy mission, but quickly get betrayed by one of the quickest enemies. they enlist the help of a

from the scene with details. what happened. >> reporter: let me set the scene for you. this is a nine-story apartment building here on the roof. there is a patio, and it's a fenced in area with tables and chairs with a commanding view of the city. this is a quiet building, and most days are uneventful, but that changed this morning. at 3:45 this morning, police, fire and ems arrived here and were responding to a report that a member of a group of people gathered on the roof top patio, and disappeared down an air shaft on the roof. >> when we arrived on the scene, we were greeted by -- firefighters were greeted by people who indicated that they were on the roof, and an acquaintance climbed up what was described as a smoke stack and apparently had fallen down. rescue workers went to the roof and went down to the lower
